TCL Sells 82% Of Computer Stake, Won't Give Up Computer Business
Liang Qichun, a spokesperson from TCL Group, has told local media that though TCL will sell 82% of its computer company's stakes to an unnamed Hong Kong registered company, it will still keep the computer business as its core focus.
The spokesperson says that TCL introduced strategic investment for the computer business in order to make it develop in a healthier manner. He also admits that the selling of the stake is to solve the company's debt problems accumulated over recent years.
On November 27, TCL Computer's top management announced the company's plan of selling 82% of their stake for cash. In the meantime, they said that they had signed a complementary agreement with the buyer in which they said that TCL would enjoy priority in purchasing back the stake in the future. So far, TCL has not disclosed the details of the transaction or information about the buyer of the stake
CATT Sells Datang Mobile's Stake
China Academy of Telecommunication Technology, a main shareholder of Datang Mobile, is selling 13% of the latter's stake at Shanghai United Assets and Equity Exchange.
The transfer board at SUAEE shows that CATT has high requirements on the buyer and asks it to offer desirable opportunity for Datang Mobile's future development. It says that it is entitled to stop the stake transfer if the transaction can't be done before December 31, 2007.
Analysts quoted in local media believe that Datang Mobile may have found new investors and may be brewing plans for getting listed. Chinese media reported that PICC may spend CNY1.5 billion to acquire 15% of the stake of Datang Mobile, and other investors like China Yangtze Power Co., Ltd., China Life Insurance and Ping'an Insurance also intended to spend about CNY1 billion each puchasing a stake of Datang Mobile.
Datang Mobile is a subsidiary of Datang Telecom Technology and Industry Group and a major proponent of China's TD-SCDMA standard.
Datang Mobile Adopts ThreadX
Datang Mobile announced that it has reached an agreement with mobile phone operation system provider Express Logic to adopt the latter's ThreadX system.
According to the agreement, Datang Mobile will not only use the ThreadX operation system in its TD-SCDMA terminal solution, but also use it on other mobile phone terminals.
Sun Yuwang, vice president of Datang Mobile, says that Express Logic's ThreadX operation system will bring them high performance and low cost products, which will benefit their terminal manufacturers and speed up the unveiling of their mobile solutions.
Qiao Xing To Supply CDMA Wireless Cityphone Sets
Qiao Xing's (XING) subsidiary Huizhou Qiao Xing Communication Industry Limited ("HZQXCI") has signed sale and purchase agreements with four sub-branches of China Telecom (CHA) in Yunnan.
The agreements provide for the supply by HZQXCI of up to 30,000 units of CDMA Wireless Cityphone sets to the four local communications operators. The first shipments are expected in the middle of September 2005.
The CDMA Wireless Cityphone is a mobile wireless communications terminal product using the 3G-frequency band and the landline network, operated mainly by China Telecom and China Netcom in China. It is similar to the Little Smart Phone in terms of the one-way charge system and the airtime charge rate, which is as low as that for conventional fixed-line telephone.
However, unlike the Little Smart Phone, the CDMA Cityphone uses CDMA technology instead of the PHS one, and so has better communications qualities and is more environmentally friendly.
China Mobile Sets Up Subsidiary For TD Operation
A representative from China Mobile (CHL) has disclosed to media that it has registered a filial to be wholly engaged in TD-SCDMA operations in China.
The representative says that China Mobile will combine the TD trial network and the related personnel from the eight TD trial cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Qinhuangdao, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Xiamen to form this wholly-owned subsidiary.
China Mobile will publish soon the results of TD equipment bidding which was initiated on March 20 when eight TD equipment manufacturers including ZTE and Huawei were invited to join. At the time of that disclosure, all the details on how China Mobile plans to build the TD network in the eight cities will be unveiled.
According to China Mobile's general plan, it will build 15000 base stations in the eight cities which will involve a total of CNY26.7 billion in investment in the first schedule alone.
